Palio Marinaro in Porto Ercole

The 43rd Edition of The Palio Marinaro will be held on Saturday 28 May in the port of Porto Ercole.

The 4 districts of the village will compete with oars, wich take the name of the fortress that dominate the promontory of the Porto Ercole.

  • Forte Filippo, Red and Blue flag, built in 1558 by Giovanni Camerino commissioned by King Philip II of Spain from wich the fort name derives. Today the fortress is privately owned but you can walk along the perimeter enjoying a fantastic view.
  • Santa Caterina, white and red flag, the fortification was built in the mid-18th century by Spaniards. Unfortunately today it is private property.
  • Forte Stella, White and blue flag, built in the mid-16th century by the Spaniards. It was one of the strategic defensive points on Argentaio promontory. The fort can be visited on weekends from 10:30-12:30/16:00-18:00 until June 30. On july and august will also be possible to visit every day.
  • Rocca Aldobrandesca, Black and yellow flaag, started to be built by Aldobrandeschi in 1300. the building has a particular shape, you can get there either by car or by walking and enjoying the view. The fort can be visited, you will find all the necessary information on the website of the municipality of Monte Argentario.

The palio event will be divided into two parts. At 18:00 “Paliotto” will start where the boys of our country will row, while at 19:00 the older ones will head to the starting buoys.

You can look at it arriving at the end of the Lungomare Andrea Doria or go up to the Borgo Antico and head towards Piazza Santa Barbara.

Unfortunately about Covid it was no longer possible to organize the Palio and after two years of waiting it will finally be possible to return to experience the emotions of this popular tradition.
